Stability studies indicate that NMN is sensitive to heat, light, and pH extremes. In aqueous solution, hydrolysis can cleave the phosphate linkage or convert NMN to related nicotinamide derivatives, with degradation accelerating at elevated temperatures and alkaline conditions. Solid material is generally more stable when kept dry and cold, and research-grade supplies are often stored at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower, protected from light and moisture. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles of solutions can promote degradation, so aliquoting is a common laboratory practice. The exact shelf life depends on purity, counterion, packaging, and storage history.
Quality control for NMN focuses on identity, purity, and the absence of harmful contaminants. Certificates of analysis may report high-performance liquid chromatography purity, mass spectrometry identity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits, depending on grade and intended use. Because NMN can exist as different isomers, salts, or hydrates, specification sheets should state the exact form being tested. There is no single globally harmonized purity standard for NMN products. Open questions include which degradation products are most relevant under real-world storage and how analytical results from different laboratories can be compared reliably.
Quality control for NMN materials typically includes appearance, assay, impurity profile, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits. A certificate of analysis summarizes specified tests, but the underlying methods and laboratory accreditation matter. Regulatory treatment varies by country; NMN is sold as a dietary supplement in some markets, while other jurisdictions restrict its use in foods or classify it differently. Independent verification can reduce risks of mislabeling or substitution. Questions remain about how product purity, storage history, and formulation affect delivered dose in humans.
Solid NMN is a polar, water-soluble nucleotide that can absorb moisture from air. Its phosphate ester is susceptible to hydrolysis, and degradation is faster in aqueous solution, under strongly acidic or alkaline conditions, and at elevated temperatures. For laboratory and commercial handling, the solid is typically kept desiccated, protected from light, and stored frozen. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles can introduce moisture and accelerate breakdown. Stability data for specific formulations should be generated rather than assumed from the parent compound.
Identity and purity of NMN are commonly assessed by liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection or mass spectrometry. High-performance liquid chromatography can separate related impurities such as nicotinamide, nicotinamide riboside, and NAD+ depending on the method. Mass spectrometry provides molecular mass confirmation, while nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy helps establish structure and anomeric form. Quantitative assays often use calibration curves and, in biological samples, stable isotope-labeled internal standards. Method validation addresses specificity, linearity, accuracy, precision, and limits of detection.

| Common synonyms | Nicotinamide mononucleotide, beta-NMN, NMN | Synonym use varies by isomer and salt form. |
Quality control for NMN focuses on identity, purity, residual solvents, heavy metals, and microbial limits. Because the molecule can absorb water, moisture content and packaging are relevant to shelf life. Suppliers may provide certificates of analysis, but independent verification is often needed for research or commercial use. The long-term stability of different crystal forms, salt forms, and formulations is not fully characterized in the public literature. Some degradation products and their effects on product performance remain open questions.
As a commercial ingredient, nicotinamide mononucleotide is commonly supplied as a powder or capsule. Its stability depends on temperature, moisture, pH, and light exposure. Hydrolytic and thermal degradation can increase over time, so manufacturers and laboratories often store material cold and dry. Purity is typically assessed with chromatographic methods, and identity can be confirmed by mass spectrometry. Published stability data for specific finished products remain limited. More data would help define shelf life under real-world conditions.
Regulatory treatment of NMN differs by country and has changed over time. In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration has stated that NMN is excluded from the definition of a dietary supplement because it was investigated as a drug before being marketed as a supplement; enforcement and legal interpretation continue to evolve. In the European Union, NMN may require authorization as a novel food before sale. In Japan, NMN has been marketed in some food products, while it is not approved as a therapeutic drug in major markets. These categories affect labeling, permitted claims, and quality oversight.
Solid NMN is generally handled as a moisture-sensitive and light-sensitive material. Suppliers commonly recommend storage at minus 20 degrees Celsius in a sealed, desiccated container, protected from light. Aqueous solutions are less stable than the solid and may degrade faster at elevated temperatures or extreme pH values. Because NMN contains a phosphate ester and a glycosidic bond, hydrolysis and other degradation pathways are plausible under unfavorable conditions. Stability data from independent laboratories remain limited, so handling recommendations often reflect supplier practice rather than published consensus.
Analytical measurement of NMN typically uses high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, often at a wavelength near 260 nanometers. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry provides greater sensitivity and specificity, especially for biological samples. Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy can confirm structure and detect certain impurities. Purity values reported by suppliers depend on the analytical method, calibration standards, and whether related compounds such as nicotinamide or NAD+ are included in the calculation. Independent verification is useful because supplement labels may not fully describe the tested material.
=== Duration of immunity === The long-term duration of protection from varicella vaccine is unknown, but there are now persons vaccinated twenty years ago with no evidence of waning immunity, while others have become vulnerable in as few as six years. Assessments of the duration of immunity are complicated in an environment where natural disease is still common, which typically leads to an overestimation of effectiveness. Some vaccinated children have been found to lose their protective antibodies in as little as five to eight years. However, according to the World Health Organization (WHO): "After observation of study populations for periods of up to 20 years in Japan and 10 years in the United States, more than 90% of immunocompetent persons who were vaccinated as children were still protected from varicella." However, since only one out of five Japanese children were vaccinated, the annual exposure of these vaccinees to children with natural chickenpox boosted the vaccinees' immune system. In the United States, where universal varicella vaccination has been practiced, the majority of children no longer receive exogenous (outside) boosting, thus, their cell-mediated immunity to VZV (varicella zoster virus) wanes – necessitating booster chickenpox vaccinations. As time goes on, boosters may be necessary. Persons exposed to the virus after vaccination tend to experience milder cases of chickenpox if they develop the disease.
=== Function === Mitochondrial fatty acid synthesis plays a crucial role in cellular energy metabolism by generating octanoyl‑ACP (C8), which serves as the direct precursor for lipoic acid biosynthesis. Lipoic acid is an essential cofactor covalently attached to specific lysine residues on target enzymes in a process called lipoylation. This post‑translational modification is essential for the activity of key mitochondrial enzyme complexes—namely, the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDC), the α‑ketoglutarate dehydrogenase complex (OGDC), the 2-oxoadipate dehydrogenase complex (2‑OADHC), the branched‑chain α‑ketoacid dehydrogenase complex (BCKDC), and the glycine cleavage system (GCS). In parallel, mtFAS and its acyl‑ACP products provide a metabolic feedback mechanism, regulating mitochondrial acetyl‑CoA consumption and thereby integrating lipid synthesis with broader metabolic control. Beyond octanoyl‑ACP, mtFAS also produces longer‑chain acyl‑ACP species such as myristoyl‑ACP (C14) and palmitoyl‑ACP (C16), which interact with members of the leucine‑tyrosine‑arginine motif (LYRM) protein family. These LYRM proteins are vital for the correct assembly and stability of the electron‑transport chain (ETC) complexes and for iron–sulfur (Fe–S) cluster biogenesis within mitochondria. In addition to these enzymatic and structural roles, mtFAS has also been implicated as a mediator of intracellular signal transduction. This is supported by observations that the levels of bioactive lipids—such as lysophospholipids and sphingolipids—correlate with mtFAS activity.
In column chromatography a mixture of substances is dissolved in a mobile phase and passed over a stationary phase in a column. A selectivity factor is defined as the ratio of distribution coefficients, which describe the equilibrium distribution of an analyte between the stationary phase and the mobile phase. The selectivity factor is equal to the selectivity coefficient with the added assumption that the activity of the stationary phase, the substrate in this case, is equal to 1, the standard assumption for a pure phase. The resolution of a chromatographic column, RS is related to the selectivity factor by:

Thioesters are prominent active esters, as illustrated by the esters of coenzyme A. Terpenes and terpenoids are generated from active esters. Some biosynthetically significant active esters include isopentenyl pyrophosphate, dimethylallyl pyrophosphate, and geranyl pyrophosphate.
== History == The first few amino acids were discovered in the early 1800s. In 1806, French chemists Louis-Nicolas Vauquelin and Pierre Jean Robiquet isolated a compound from asparagus that was subsequently named asparagine, the first amino acid to be discovered. Cystine was discovered in 1810, although its monomer, cysteine, remained undiscovered until 1884. Glycine and leucine were discovered in 1820. The last of the 20 common amino acids to be discovered was threonine in 1935 by William Cumming Rose, who also determined the essential amino acids and established the minimum daily requirements of all amino acids for optimal growth. The unity of the chemical category was recognized by Wurtz in 1865, but he gave no particular name to it. The first use of the term "amino acid" in the English language dates from 1898, while the German term, Aminosäure, was used earlier. Proteins were found to yield amino acids after enzymatic digestion or acid hydrolysis. In 1902, Emil Fischer and Franz Hofmeister independently proposed that proteins are formed from many amino acids, whereby bonds are formed between the amino group of one amino acid with the carboxyl group of another, resulting in a linear structure that Fischer termed "peptide".
== Treatment == Treatment of tendon injuries is largely conservative. Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), rest, and gradual return to exercise is a common therapy. A meta-analysis revealed that exercise using weights or a resistance band is more effective than using bodyweight alone. In addition, having rest days is more effective than exercising every day. Resting assists in the prevention of further damage to the tendon. Ice, compression and elevation are also frequently recommended. Physical therapy, occupational therapy, orthotics or braces may also be useful. Initial recovery is typically within two to three days and full recovery is within three to six months. Tendinosis occurs as the acute phase of healing has ended (six to eight weeks) but has left the area insufficiently healed. Treatment of tendinitis helps reduce some of the risks of developing tendinosis, which takes longer to heal. There is tentative evidence that low-level laser therapy may also be beneficial in treating tendinopathy. The effects of deep transverse friction massage for treating tennis elbow and lateral knee tendinitis is unclear.
In 1968, Culp also made an uncredited cameo appearance as an inebriated Turkish waiter on Get Smart, the spy-spoof comedy series, in an I Spy parody episode titled "Die Spy". In this, secret agent Maxwell Smart played by Don Adams in effect assumes Culp's Kelly Robinson character, as he pretends to be an international table-tennis champion. The episode faithfully recreates the I Spy theme music, montage graphics, and back-and-forth banter between Robinson and Scott, with actor/comedian Stu Gilliam imitating Cosby. In 1971, Culp, Peter Falk, Robert Wagner, and Darren McGavin each stepped in to take turns with Anthony Franciosa's rotation of NBC's series The Name of the Game after Franciosa was fired, alternating a lead role of the lavish, 90-minute show about the magazine business with Gene Barry and Robert Stack. Also in 1971, he portrayed an unemployed actor, the husband of ambitious Angie Dickinson, in the TV movie See the Man Run. Culp played the murderer in three Columbo episodes ("Death Lends a Hand" in 1971, "The Most Crucial Game" in 1972, "Double Exposure" in 1973) and also appeared in the 1990 episode "Columbo Goes to College" as the father of one of two young murderers. He also played the murderer in the pilot episode of Mrs. Columbo starring Kate Mulgrew in the title role. In 1973, Culp almost took the male lead in the sci-fi television series Space: 1999. During negotiations with creator and executive producer Gerry Anderson, Culp expressed himself to be not only an asset as an actor, but also as a director and producer for the proposed series.
Early drafts of the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation in 2016 included an explicit statement that this right exists. Industry experts noted that this is an unsolved problem with no solution in sight. Regulators argued that nevertheless the harm is real: if the problem has no solution, the tools should not be used. DARPA established the XAI ("Explainable Artificial Intelligence") program in 2014 to try to solve these problems. Several approaches aim to address the transparency problem. SHAP enables to visualise the contribution of each feature to the output. LIME can locally approximate a model's outputs with a simpler, interpretable model. Multitask learning provides a large number of outputs in addition to the target classification. These other outputs can help developers deduce what the network has learned. Deconvolution, DeepDream and other generative methods can allow developers to see what different layers of a deep network for computer vision have learned, and produce output that can suggest what the network is learning. For generative pre-trained transformers, Anthropic developed a technique based on dictionary learning that associates patterns of neuron activations with human-understandable concepts.

===== Cetacean research ===== Peacock & Thewissen (2026) compare volume measurements of the bony labyrinth in extant mammals and Eocene cetaceans, and hypothesize that fossil cetaceans had membranous ducts of relatively larger size compared to terrestrial even-toed ungulates, and that vestibular organs of early cetaceans were necessary for terrestrial locomotion. Buono et al. (2026) reconstruct changes of cetacean morphological diversity and ecospace occupancy throughout the evolutionary history of the group, identifying Eocene–Oligocene and Plio–Pleistocene transitions as periods of major evolutionary changes, and linking changes of ecospace occupancy to the main radiation events of the group. Tyborowski et al. (2026) report the discovery of a portion of a dentary of an indeterminate member of Pelagiceti from the Siemień Formation, representing the first record of an Eocene whale from Poland and one of the smallest fully aquatic Eocene whales reported to date. A deciduous tooth of a basilosaurid with evidence of malformation that might have been caused by localized stress is described from the Eocene Submeseta Formation (Seymour Island, Antarctica) by Bajor et al. (2026). Hakkens, Reumer & Schulp (2026) study the affinities of the basilosaurid specimen TM 8501 from the Eocene (Priabonian) Yazoo Clay (Alabama, United States; the holotype of Zeuglodon hydrarchus), identify the studied individual as a mid-sized cetacean distinct from Dorudon serratus and Chrysocetus healyorum, an tentatively refer the specimen to Zygorhiza kochii. Petroleum production has been linked with conflict for many years, leading to thousands of deaths. Petroleum deposits are in very few countries around the world. Conflicts may start when countries refuse to cut oil production in which other countries respond to such actions by increasing their production causing a trade war as experienced during the 2020 Russia–Saudi Arabia oil price war. Other conflicts start with countries wanting petroleum resources or other reasons on oil resource territory experienced in the Iran–Iraq War.
=== Former commissioners === David Gallop was the initial chief executive officer of the restructured ARL Commission. He was previously the CEO of the NRL and his contract extension to become inaugural ARL CEO was a condition placed by News Limited with the ARL. On 5 June 2012 the ARL announced Gallop's departure from the CEO position and that he would take up a position at the FFA in 2013. David Smith was announced as the new ARL CEO in November 2012, taking charge on 1 February 2013.
=== Part Two === Part Two begins some time before Part One, taking place somewhere before the chapter Anticitizen One during the final events of Half-Life 2. During the battle for City 17, a Russian Resistance member (Julia Tourianski) is about to be killed by CP officers when the third Resistance member (David Purchase), who was only heard in a radio transmission during Part One, saves her by killing the officers. At first, she doesn't trust him, but after partnering up together to survive the battle, they become closer to each other. At one point in the film, they kiss in an abandoned restroom after destroying a Combine Strider. Sometime later, David gives Julia a present: a 9mm pistol with the slogan "Never Gone" written on the side. She starts to weep, because she hadn't been "given a gift in over a decade." Soon after, the final events of Half-Life 2, as well as the chapters Undue Alarm and Direct Intervention of Episode One, come to pass, and the Citadel's dark energy reactor begins to enter meltdown. However, Gordon Freeman's actions delay the reaction long enough to allow citizens and Resistance members alike to escape City 17. David and Julia decide to leave the city as well. After reaching the old canals and combating zombies, the first two Resistance members from Part One, Derek and Ian, finally catch up with the duo. As they walk together, they talk about Freeman's actions within the Citadel. Suddenly, David is shot in the neck by a CP officer. As the other two members fire back at the incoming Combine soldiers, David dies in Julia's arms.
5α-Reductase inhibitors are inhibitors of the enzyme 5α-reductase, and are a type of specific androgen synthesis inhibitor. 5α-Reductase is an enzyme that is responsible for the conversion of testosterone into the more potent androgen dihydrotestosterone (DHT). There are three different isoforms of 5α-reductase, types 1, 2, and 3, and these three isoforms show different patterns of expression in the body. Relative to testosterone, DHT is about 2.5- to 10-fold more potent as an agonist of the androgen receptor. As such, 5α-reductase serves to considerably potentiate the effects of testosterone. However, 5α-reductase is expressed only in specific tissues, such as skin, hair follicles, and the prostate gland, and for this reason, conversion of testosterone into DHT happens only in certain parts of the body. Furthermore, circulating levels of total and free DHT in men are very low at about one-tenth and one-twentieth those of testosterone, respectively, and DHT is efficiently inactivated into weak androgens in various tissues such as muscle, fat, and liver. As such, it is thought that DHT plays little role as a systemic androgen hormone and serves more as a means of locally potentiating the androgenic effects of testosterone in a tissue-specific manner. Conversion of testosterone into DHT by 5α-reductase plays an important role in male reproductive system development and maintenance (specifically of the penis, scrotum, prostate gland, and seminal vesicles), male-pattern facial/body hair growth, and scalp hair loss, but has little role in other aspects of masculinization.

Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry is widely used because it can separate NMN from related nucleotides and quantify low concentrations. Stable isotope-labeled internal standards help correct for matrix effects and recovery losses. Ultraviolet detection alone is less specific for complex biological matrices.
Research-grade NMN powder is commonly stored frozen, desiccated, and protected from light. Sealed containers at minus twenty degrees Celsius or below are typical. Allow containers to reach room temperature before opening to reduce condensation.
Purity is one quality attribute and does not by itself establish identity, safety, or absence of contaminants. A complete assessment includes structural confirmation, residual solvent testing, and microbial limits when relevant. Different analytical methods can yield different purity values.
Solid NMN is often stored frozen, desiccated, and protected from light. Aqueous solutions are less stable and generally require colder storage or fresh preparation.
